History

When the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. After decades of dedicated work, that number hit an historic high of almost 7 million turkeys. The foundation of our success? Standing behind science-based conservation and hunters’ rights.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our dedicated volunteers, professional staff and committed partners, we have had many successes that advanced our mission. Together, we have facilitated the investment of $488 million in wildlife conservation and the preservation of North America’s hunting heritage. Our returns have included improving more than 17 million acres of wildlife habitat and introducing 100,000 people to the outdoors each year.

Event Types:

Hunting Heritage Banquets

Calling Events
Calling Events Recognized as the leader in wild turkey conservation and hunting, it's only natural that the NWTF also serves as the leading sanctioning-body for turkey calling contests.  Attend a local or state calling contest where you can compete yourself or cheer on your favorite contestant.

JAKES Events
NWTF chapters across North America hold Hundreds of JAKES Field Day events each year to introduce young people to the joy of the outdoors. Let your child experience the outdoors through supervised, hands-on activities at an event near you. Find out more here!

Shooting Events
It's only natural the NWTF is extremely involved in many local and national shooting events across the country. Whether it's shooting in an NWTF event in your hometown or attending the NWTF's nationally recognized Turkey Shoot or World Wild Turkey Still Target Championships, competitors have many opportunities to get involved through NWTF sanctioned shooting events.

Wheelin' Sportsmen Events
One of the NWTF's most promising partnerships, Wheelin' Sportsmen gives people with disabilities the chance to experience the outdoors. Whether it's for the first time or a reintroduction into outdoor activities, Wheelin' Sportsmen brings back the joy of the wild to those with disabilities.

Women in the Outdoors Events (WITO)
Designed just for women, teach outdoor skills using expert instructors. Want to hike, bike, fish, camp or hunt? Or maybe you're into outdoor photography, bird watching or primitive cooking? Check out a menu of outdoor activities and meet new friends at a Women in the Outdoors event in your area.

Landowner Workshops
Ask any wildlife biologist what it takes to keep wildlife healthy, happy and close to home, and they'll tell you it's all about having good habitat. Learn how to make your land suitable for wildlife by attending the National Wild Turkey Federation's Wildlife Habitat Management Workshop.
